"The Black Dots" (
Summary[]
A voice notes that there is soot leaking from the top of the box and Patrick looks up to see Emilico peering in. Patrick gets irritated realising that Emilico and Rum heard his breakdown and Emilico attempts to calm him mentioning how Ricky was smart to choose the soot suit as well as warns him of the rule that Shadows will fail if their clothes are dirty. Emilico then gives Patrick some orange slices, a daffodil she took from the conservatory, and a promise to meet again. Shaun struggles to get out of a trap which is a hut with heavy doors then meets up with Emilico and Rum. The trio compares what they have gone through in the maze and decide on a route. Their current obstacle is a gate with a series of wooden animal carvings on pedestals.
Plot[]
One of the voices notices a stream of soot from a hole at the top prompting Patrick to look up but the light is blocked by some shape that asks if Patrick can see them. Another voice says he can't if they're too close so the object moves away, revealing themselves as Emilico. Patrick realizes that Emilico has heard his rant earlier and accuses her of looking down on him ordering her to forget what he said but Emilico argues that she can't forget something so quickly. Emilico then talks about how Ricky is worried about him and that he chose a soot suit, calling him clever. She then warns Patrick of the rule that the Shadow's clothes cannot be dirtied. Her attempt to find a hint to free Patrick is stopped as Patrick asserts that Ricky will definitely save him as he has a good head. Emilico gives Patrick some orange slices then a daffodil, finally leaving Patrick a wish to meet him again with Kate and leaves. In the darkness, Patrick can't even see the flower, saying that Emilico's nickname as a "Flower Garden" really suits her. Shaun lifts a heavy door, complaining about the trap he was just in which was a hut that shut its heavy doors when he got in, moving on, he runs into Emilico and Rum. The adult Shadows comment on this, with Ryan and Dorothy giving ideas on what one of the three will do next with their plans centering around betraying the others but Sophie and Joseph comment with facts about the three, stopping the daydreaming session.
Emilico takes a look at the map with Shaun, noting that the lines under the dots are just lines, not words and the three share their various experiences in the maze so far. They agree to take a route over to one of the Shadows, going around the maze to the exit. With this, their path is currently blocked by a gate where they notice several small pedestals with carved animals on top of each.
