"The Supervisor's Calculations" (
Summary[]
Edward is given permission by Joseph, a member of the 3rd floor, to conduct an inspection of the Children's Building. He is confronted by Thomas who is suspicious that Edward is hiding things. In private, Edward, Gerald, and Aileen realize that Barbara could possibly be a malcontent but is protected from disposal as her soot quantity and position as the leader of the Star Bearers make her too valuable. They decide to continue their efforts to expose Kate and plan to break up her team from the inside.
Plot[]
Edward reports that there has been an increase in activity of Scorches in the Children's Building, believing that the Star Bearers are lacking, and he will carry out an inspection with precautions to ensure his face will not show. Joseph approves of this idea. In a hallway, Edward meets Thomas who asks if he is feeling guilty about something, seeing the connection between Maryrose and the repairs of the Passageway of Glory, before telling Edward to not get carried away with his ambitions. In Edward's room, Aileen and Gerald bring up the idea to kill Thomas but Edward notes that the majority of the 2nd floor are on Thomas' side and the three of them have none, being newcomers. Edward had reported that Maryrose simply died to fusion failure and only Thomas deeply inquires about what happened. The three theorize that Barbara is also a malcontent but her position is too secure, being put as a Star Bearer by Thomas and her soot quantity being too valuable to get rid of. They decide to focus their efforts on Kate again as Edward plans to break up her team from the inside during his inspection.
