Emilico (エミリコ, Emiriko^?) is the main protagonist of the Shadows House series and narrates some of the chapters. She is a Living Doll and works as a maid in the Shadows House, acting as the "face" of Kate Shadow.

Appearance[]

Emilico is a young girl with long blonde hair, deep purple-blue eyes and pale skin. She wears a maid dress reminiscent of the Victorian style, with dark sleeves, white apron and skirt. She wears white drawers underneath and a sleeveless undershirt. Her hair is done in pigtails, that are held in place with big dark-blue bows.

Before entering the House, she used to wear a brown dress with a white apron over it, long white socks and brown shoes. Her hair was done in two buns on the sides of her head. During circus performances, she wore a white shirt with frills and a short sleeveless jacket over it, brown shorts with frills and suspenders, and striped black-and-white tights with holes for walking a tightrope. On one of her buns, she wore a tiny tophat.

Personality[]

Emilico is cheerful and hard-working. Her top priority is taking care of her master, Kate Shadow, with whom she is friends. She likes making friends and spending time with them. Although she is inexperienced and clumsy at times, she is also dependable. She keeps a positive attitude and stands up for others. Emilico is curious and eager to learn new things. She enjoys cleaning in the Shadows House and always tries to improve.

Early life[]

Emilico used to be a nameless orphan, who was picked up and raised by a traveling circus. She was made to do odd jobs and entertain people with her tightrope walking skills and tricks, leading to her being called that by circus staff. On the morning of their show in Mirrorside Village, Emilico met a strange girl, fully covered in darkness. Later that morning, she couldn't stop thinking about her and made a plush toy that resembled the girl. The Ringmaster freaked out when he saw the toy, exclaiming "Did you see them?! Those face-snatching fairies?!" and reprimanded Emilico for bringing bad luck to his circus. During the performance, Emilico was still lost in thought and messed up, causing the ringmaster to fire her.

She was found crying by John, Patrick, Louise, and Shirley after the incident. The kids calmed her down and proposed the idea of joining the selection with them to her. Emilico agreed and ran back to the circus to get her things, where she found the girl from that morning rummaging through things. The girl introduced herself as "Kate", commenting that she and Emilico look alike, aside from their noses, then left with a black cloak. Emilico rejoined the others and snuck into the school building to add herself into the selection list under the name "Kate".

After that, she spent the night at Shirley's house and reassured her about going to the mansion, helping her bring a little piece of home with her in a form of a ribbon from Shirley's toy rabbit Rummy.

Next morning, John, Louise and Patrick came to Shirley's house, where they helped "Kate" get ready. While boys tried to style "Kate's" hair, Shirley helped her get dressed.

After the selection, "Kate", along with the others, was brainwashed via coffee and brought into the House, where she was approached by a strange cloaked figure.

Plot[]

Introduction Arc[]

Emilico is a living doll for her shadow master Kate, who she struggles to understand. She doesn't realize that living dolls need to eat and accidentally breaks a porcelain doll from hunger, eventually collapsing, causing Kate to scold her. Her clumsiness also causes her to sleep in after being too excited from learning how to read. Kate gives her higher quality bread which sparks a love for bread in the doll.

When trying to clean a window, Kate opens it to reveal the dirt was outside. Looking outside, Emilico spots another Living Doll at the window above her but accidentally gets stuck when the window comes down, trapping her. The new living doll giggles, then returns Emilico's greeting before Kate brings Emilico back in. Looking out the window again, she spots a pair walking outside and waves to them, getting the attention of the living doll who only glares at her.

In the morning, Emilico is allowed out of her room to clean for the first time and meets Mia, the same doll who was upstairs before. Emilico is lead to meet her new team made of herself, Mia, Rosemary, and Lou and is in awe over the number of living dolls outside the room. She ends up falling into the collected soot after cleaning and uses the desooting room after returning to her room to get clean. Kate takes interests in this and tries it out, but tears her capelet and gives it to Emilico.

One day, Emilico is looking for Kate's book and knocks over a flower vase, cleaning up the mess with a nearby plush doll. She angers Kate when asking if she should throw it out and the shadow storms off to take a bath. Emilico decides to fix Kate's doll and turns the leftovers into a doll for herself, naming it Rolly. Kate re-enters and apologizes after seeing Emilico's work.

When cleaning the window, Rolly falls out of her pocket and Emilico falls out of the room trying to save it. Once Kate finds her outside, they are met with Mia and her shadow master, Sarah. Sarah insults Emilico as she is unable to tell Kate's expression and leaves. Kate assures Emilico she is growing as she protected something important to her but to also take care of herself.

Emilico faithfully serves her master. She enjoys spending time with Kate and does her best to please her. Kate and Emilico share a strong bond. Kate always has a lot of patience with Emilico's oblivious behavior because she knows she puts effort into her duty.

Mia[]

Emilico considers Mia a friend. She was the first Living Doll she met and is looking up to her.

Rosemary[]

Rosemary was Emilico's team leader and a mentor figure. Emilico respected and looked up to her, considering her a friend. Rosemary was always kind and gentle to her, willing to answer every question she had.

Shaun[]

Emilico is Shaun's closest friend among the living dolls. They met when Emilico was trying to protect Mia from Barbie. Shaun was observing the scene closely and when Barbie was about to possibly hurt Emilico, he stepped in to protect her, even though he said that it was just because Barbie was getting on his nerves. They became closer during the night patrol, along side with Rum and became great friends.

Lou[]

Emilico considers Lou a close friend. As members of the same team, they interact a lot during cleaning. Lou respects Emilico's ideas, as she herself has hard time deciding on things and supports her. She jumped in to catch Emilico on multiple occasions, most notably, when she was acting as a "Face".

Rum[]

Rum and Emilico get along pretty well. Emilico protects Rum when she is oppressed. They met during the night patrol with Shaun. They considered each other as friends and wanted to meet again, alongside Shaun.

Ricky[]

Ricky used to pick on Emilico when they first met during the Debut, but by the end of it, he willingly wanted to help her pass (by giving her the shears he got from Lou). Emilico never paid mind to his jabs and was happy to see him when they met up near Kate's cage. After the Debut, they didn't interact much, but this positive development seemed to stay, as Ricky felt bad after making a joke at Emilico's expense.

Patrick[]

Patrick secretly fell in love with Emilico after his encounter with her in the Debut. After receiving the yellow daffodil that she gave him, he since then has had a liking to flowers.

Barbie[]

Barbie despises Emilico for her cheery attitude, calling her a "flower garden" as an insult.

Belle Twins[]

Like with everyone else, Belles were mean to Emilico, making fun of her. After the passing of one Belle, Emilico treated the remaining one with kindness and patience, letting her take her time to grieve the loss of her twin and trying to be friends with her. Belle seemingly appreciated it, as she was shown reading the letters Emilico left her and kept the plush doll she made in her apron pocket. She also jumped in to catch Emilico when she almost passed out, even though she was acting as a "Face" in that moment.

Oliver[]

Oliver admires Emilico for her strength and sturdiness, calling her a "Super Living Doll". Emilico is always welcome in the Research Team's headquarters.

Etymology[]

Emilico comes from the name "Emily" which is a female given name derived from the Roman family name "Aemilius", meaning "rival" or "industrious and hardworking"

Trivia[]

Prior to the official English localization of the manga and the English subtitles of the anime adaptation, she was referred to as Emilyko in fan translations.
Emilico used to work in a circus.^[2]
Her past nicknames were "Tightrope" and "Odd Jobs", as those were the only things she was known for.
She borrowed Kate's name for a while, just only to enter the selection.
Kate named Emilico after her grandmother Emily, adding a twist to her name.
