John (ジョン Jon?) is one of the side protagonists in the Shadows House series and the Shadow living under the care of the "Living Doll", Shaun.
Appearance[]
Like the rest of the Shadows in the house, John is entirely black and appears to be a silhouette of his "Face", Shaun. John is a young boy with short unkempt hair. He wears a white shirt will frills with a long stale blue coat, reaching to his knees, that closes in the front by a golden clasp. The coat has a striped pattern on it and a long strip of layered frills along the back. His dark-blue pants reach down to his knees and end in white cuffs with two black buttons. On his feet are long white socks and blue shoes with yellow chain pattern across the front.
Personality[]
John is known to be quite friendly with everyone and very open minded. Unlike many shadows he treats Shaun with respect and even offers to wear glasses so that Shaun can be seen while wearing his. Like Kate and Emilico, John and Shaun are polar opposites. John is a muscle headed extrovert while Shaun is a thoughtful introvert. Despite this, the two are very good friends and John cares for his "face" immensely.
Plot[]
The Debut Arc[]
John orders Shaun for him to go to bed, but Shaun does not want to rest yet. John treats Shaun like an equal and was even willing to wear glasses for his sake. Shaun gives him a good night kiss.
The Shadows and their Living Dolls have gathered for their upcoming Debut. When Edward started to play the piano, Patrick and Ricky started dancing. John, Shaun, and the others join in. Edward stops playing the piano and calls the Shadows for them to come out and leave the Living Dolls behind.
John spontaneously escaped his prison due to the excessive strength of his soot power. He saw Kate and asked her if he could take her hand in marriage, even saying that he would be the "King of the Shadows House". Kate was annoyed with him and rejected John. John was sad and wanted to save Kate but couldn't because Living Dolls had to save them, so John just told Kate to call him if Kate wanted to be saved right away.
John meets Shaun, Emilico, and Rum. He tells them that he has voluntarily escaped from the jail that was made for him. Shaun was sad because John's clothes were soiled. John and Shaun help Emilico and Rum find their masters. John tells Emilico where Kate is. Later, John and Shaun say goodbye to Emilico and Rum because John and Shaun needed to pass the Debut.
John's clothes became clean because of the soot remover. They see Ricky and he tells them to open Shaun's door, but Shaun will only open the door if Ricky apologizes for kicking him. John was excited and watched the two as they fought with each other. John gives them points with whom he will agree with what one of them is saying. When Shaun was about to open the door for Ricky, he saw Lou's shears. Ricky said that Lou gave them to him but Shaun didn't believe him. Ricky returns and Shaun hears the bell that someone has passed the Debut. He called for Ricky but a boulder was rolling towards him. Ricky came running back as John opened the gate and he punched the rock until it was destroyed. He gives 3 points to Ricky. They say goodbye to Ricky because they needed to get back.
John and Shaun have already passed the Debut with the others, besides Rum and Shirley. The Shadows and the Living Dolls that were there greeted and congratulated them. When they found out Shirley and Rum hadn’t passed, they laughed. But John, Patrick and Kate were not happy. John looked at Shaun, but Shaun was just smiling and not himself.
Introduction Arc[]
He was first seen in his morph form along with the other Shadows. They went to the Living Dolls that would soon be their "Faces" when they become Shadows.
He sneaks out of his room and sees a girl in red running down the halls. He follows Kate as she runs down to the gardens. While Emilico and Kate were talking, John glances at Kate's beauty and starts falling for her.

Kidnapping Arc[]
John looks at the miniature Kate figurine and talks to it. When they were celebrating, John gave Kate his towel and told Kate to go to John's room if Kate would agree to get married. Kate did go to John's room but not because of the proposal, but because Emilico was missing. Kate has also told John the fact that the Living Dolls have been brainwashed and that they are human. Kate asks John if he noticed anything strange about Shaun as Shaun finishes cleaning the bathroom. John returns Shaun to his former self by punching him. The two fought until Shaun was back to normal. They left and went to Patrick and Ricky's room with Louise and Lou. They talk about how they are going to rescue Emilico.
Barbara and Barbie hear voices talking in Patrick's room and visit them. The others escape through Ricky's room. Louise controls a veiled doll to help them out. They exit Ricky's room. John and Shaun help Kate get into the Lord Grandfather's Wing. John wanted to go with Kate but she said they did enough help.
John dresses in a veiled doll uniform to enter the Lord Grandfather's Wing. When he was there, he didn’t know which floor he was on. He then saw a small black creature that led him to Edward’s room. Gerald and Aileen saw John, so he ran to Edward's room. When he saw Kate and Emilico come out, Edward was also chasing them. They went to a high place and John used his soot power to make Kate and Emilico jump safely. John was tired, but the small black creature helped him, so John was able to return safely. The problem is over.
In a slideshow, it is shown that Susanna is teaching Kate, John, and Louise, but John is drowsy. Later, as John sat down, he listened to Shaun sing.Relationships[]
Shaun[]
John trusts Shaun and has a great liking to him. Though Shadow house teaches the face's to be like their Shadows, John offered to wear glasses so that Shaun, who has bad eyesight, can wear them too.
Kate[]
John has had a liking towards Kate before they first met during the Debut. Since then, he has offered marriage proposals and announced his love for her many times. He also has complete trust towards her judgement and beliefs of the Shadows House, willing to follow everything she suggests. Where the plot is right now, they both have mutual trust and a nice partnership.
John met Kate before as a Morph, and even then, he always stuck close to her. This may or may not have caused him to fall in love at first sight with Kate.
Patrick[]
John and Patrick, just like their "faces", do not get along. They often fight, with John seemingly looking for a reason to throw hands, and Patrick thinking that John is an annoying idiot. John also joins Louise in teasing Patrick. Even though they fight, they do consider each other friends.
Emilico[]
John and Emilico get along very well, seeing they have similar personalities. Shaun has even noted that Emilico understands his master much more than him. John thinks of Emilico as a little sister.

Soot Quantity[]
John has one of the highest quantities of soot in the Children's Building.
Soot Power[]
John has a physical type of soot power. "John Punch", as himself named it, allows him to fire powerful blasts from his fists. He first uses this power to save Ricky from a rolling boulder during the Debut which broke it up into pieces. However, the blast only has a range of 2 metres as he was unable to even leave a crack on a wall a little over that distance away.
During his fight with Gilbert, observing his adversary, he learned a new technique, "John Shield", to block attacks.
Etymology[]
- The name John is derived from the Hebrew "Yohanan", meaning “graced by God”. It is a biblical name, first appearing in its Hebrew form in the Old Testament. The New Testament, which was written in Greek, adapted Yohanan as "Johannes", which became "John" in English.
Trivia[]
- When John gets bad emotions like angry or anxious his soot comes out like fireworks.
- John dislikes carrots.
- According to Kate, the texture of the soot John emits is starchy.
- It has been mentioned a few times that John had some kind of a "freak intuition".
